If you compare your result from the calculator with this table, you can answer the initial question: "Is my cat overweight?" But what do you do if the answer is "yes"? How can I help my cat lose weight?
Just like in humans, maintaining a healthy weight helps cats avoid various health problems. If you've decided to take action, you can use this cat weight calculator to check your cat's progress and see how far they are from reaching their healthy weight range. Here are some things you can do to help your cat:
- Cut down on treats. Most cats also enjoy other rewards, such as playtime with you!
- If you'd rather stick with treats, reduce the usual amount of food a bit. But don't let your cat starve. "Crash diets" don't work for humans or pets. If you were a cat, you wouldn't like that either, right?
❗ 🍫Remember that chocolate can be toxic to cats !
- Replace dry food with canned food, which is typically higher in carbohydrates and protein. This will keep your cat fuller for longer. It will also prevent constant snacking—dry food is to cats what chips (or other snacks) are to us!
- Play with your cat. Consider it enjoyable exercise for your furry friend and a way to burn excess calories.
- If you have two cats (or more), you may need to feed the overweight cat in a separate room or keep the normal-weight cat's food in a place out of reach of the larger cat.
Remember, this is only a guideline. There can be various causes of obesity, so always consult your veterinarian to rule out more serious conditions. You can also use the cat calorie calculator to get an idea of how much food your cat needs. Keeping cats slim can be challenging, especially if they prefer to stay indoors, but it's definitely worth the effort!
